Pick up the latest version. Great reference if you have an HF on board even if you are not a HAM. Both of us hold Amateur Extra class licenses.


History

Six Frigates, The History of the Founding of the U.S. Navy, Ian W. Toll
For anyone interested in early American Naval History a good read. If you sail anywhere on the east coast, particularly the Chesapeake it is a real treat as you will find you shared the same waters and anchorages as some of the most famous sailing ships in history.

Nice place to start learning about your diesel auxilliary. Great reference when soemthing goes ping in the the night.

Boatowner's Mecahnical and Electrical Manual, Nigel Calder
We have found this useful in developing our electrical system.


Navigation

Duttons Nautical Navigation, Thomas J. Cutler
A PhD course in navigation and the textbook used at the US Naval Academy. This 15th Edition is an excellent update to it's predecessor, Duttons Navigation and Piloting by Elbert S. Maloney which I first learned navigation from.

The Care and Feeding of the Offshore Crew, Lin Pardey
The book that started it all by the Grand Dame of Cruising

Cruisers Handbook of Fishing, Scot and Wendy Bannerot
If you like to eat fresh fish when cruising this is a must.


Voyaging

Off-Shore Cruising Encyclopedia, Lindaw and Steve Dashew
Great all around book on all aspects of cruising. We have found many interesting and useful ideas for Makara, as well as great cruising tips in this book

The Voyager's Handbook, Beth Leonard
Helped in intitial planning. Good reference from very experienced cruiser.

World Crusiing Routes, 5th Edition, Jimmy Cornell
Premier compilation of world route information. Great for passage planning.

Surviving the Storm, Linda and Steve Dashew
Must read for anyone going wherer the wild things are.
